What is 1688 and why is it cheaper than Alibaba?

1688.com is the domestic wholesale platform of the Alibaba group. It sells in yuan and in Chinese to buyers inside China, with no export service and no English-language support. Its price is lower than the same reference on Alibaba.com because the manufacturer has not built in the cost of exporting, the bilingual service or the intermediary margin that exist on the international platform. Buying there requires a Chinese account, a Chinese address and payment in yuan, which is exactly what a local agent provides.

Why the 1688 price is the real price

Alibaba.com exists to sell to foreign buyers. A seller who lists there takes on a structure — English-language support, export documentation, international warranty, sometimes higher platform commissions — and that structure is paid for inside the unit price. A buyer who only wants the product ends up paying for everything else as well.

1688 is the market where Chinese traders buy their own stock. There is no English-language service because none is needed: the buyer is Chinese. There is no export documentation because the product does not leave the country. And the price reflects that.

The consequence is that the same factory can appear on both platforms at different prices, and on 1688 the price spread is wider too, because manufacturers and resellers sell the same item at very different margins. Telling them apart is half the value of the service.

The real barriers on 1688

Language. The interface, the product pages, the chat negotiations and the terms are in Chinese. Browser auto-translation handles technical and material terminology badly.

Payment. The platform runs on Chinese payment methods and accounts are tied to Chinese identity. Paying from abroad without a local account is not a practical route.

Receiving. Sellers ship to addresses inside China, with domestic couriers. Many do not ship abroad at all.

Documentation. The invoice a 1688 seller issues is a Chinese invoice, not an export document. Turning that into a usable customs file takes additional work.

Disputes. The protection mechanisms exist, but they operate in Chinese, under Chinese law and for buyers with a presence in China. Exercising them from outside is, in practical terms, impossible.

How we buy on 1688

You get the same treatment as with any other supplier. We filter out the listings that are resellers, check the licence and the scope of activity of the manufacturers, negotiate the price by volume and request samples when the order justifies it.

Payment is made in yuan to the supplier company's account inside China. The 1688 invoice is handed to you as it is, with no mark-up. Our remuneration is the declared commission, which is why we have no incentive to hide the purchase price from you.

Once the goods arrive at our Shenzhen warehouse, we apply the same quality control and the same consolidation process as to any other order, and they can ship together with cargo from other suppliers.

1688 or Taobao: which one you need

1688 is built for wholesale buying: tiered pricing by quantity, minimum order quantities and sellers geared to traders. Taobao is a consumer marketplace, selling by the unit with no minimums.

When the order is small or you need to test many different references before committing, Taobao is usually the faster route. When the volume justifies negotiating by tiers, 1688 gives better prices. Many clients start by testing references on Taobao and move to 1688 once they know which product works.

Frequently asked questions about buying on 1688

What is 1688 and how is it different from Alibaba?

1688.com is the domestic wholesale platform of the Alibaba group: it sells in yuan to Chinese buyers, in Chinese, with no export service. Alibaba.com is its international platform, which sells in US dollars, in English and with suppliers set up to export. The same product is usually listed on both at different prices, because the Alibaba.com seller has already built in the cost of exporting, the English-language service and their intermediary margin.

How much cheaper is 1688, really?

The difference depends on the category and the supplier, and it varies widely. In products where the manufacturer sells directly on 1688 with no export structure, the price can be noticeably lower than the same reference on Alibaba.com. Where the Alibaba.com supplier is the manufacturer itself and already has export volume, the difference narrows or disappears. That is why we check both routes before telling you which one suits your case.

Why can't I buy on 1688 myself?

You can try, but the platform is built for the Chinese domestic market: the interface and the product page are in Chinese, prices are shown in yuan with Chinese VAT included, payment requires a Chinese account, and shipping goes to an address inside China. On top of that, most sellers do not speak English or issue export documents. An agent solves all five at once.

Does 1688 have buyer protection?

1688 has internal guarantee and dispute-resolution mechanisms, but they are designed for the Chinese legal framework, in Chinese and for Chinese buyers. Exercising them from abroad, without a Chinese account, without a Chinese address and without the language, is not workable in practice. Buying through an agent who operates inside that system is what makes those protections usable.

How do you verify a 1688 seller?

We apply the same filter as with any supplier: we check the Chinese business licence and its scope of activity, and we separate the manufacturer from the trading company that resells. On 1688 the share of trading companies is high in many categories, because it is a platform open to resellers. When the order justifies it, we visit the plant.

What if I only want very small quantities?

For small quantities, Taobao usually makes more sense than 1688, because it sells by the unit with no minimum. We work with both: the purchase is made on whichever platform fits the volume and the product type, and the goods are then consolidated at our warehouse like any other order.
