Preparing Inventory for Peak Season: Buen Fin & Q4

Real sea and air import lead times from China to Mexico, worked backwards from Buen Fin, Black Friday and Christmas so your stock lands in time.

Importing by sea from China to Mexico takes 40 to 60 calendar days, so a purchase order placed at the end of August or the beginning of September is the last one that gets stock into MercadoLibre warehouses before Buen Fin. The last quarter of the year (Q4) is the highest-revenue period for any seller on MercadoLibre and Amazon México. Events such as Buen Fin, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Christmas can account for up to 50% of annual sales.

But there is a recurring problem: sellers run out of stock because they import too late.

If you bring your goods from China by sea, you need precise planning. Here are the real timelines.

The Real Sea Freight Timelines from China to Mexico

Sea freight is the cheapest option for protecting your margin, but it demands patience. A standard schedule (a consolidated LCL shipment, DDP) looks like this:

  1. Search and purchase on 1688: 1 to 3 days.
  2. Supplier shipment to the prep center in China: 3 to 5 days.
  3. Consolidation, quality control and labelling: 2 to 4 days.
  4. Sea transit (China to Manzanillo/Lázaro Cárdenas): 20 to 25 days.
  5. Customs clearance in Mexico: 7 to 14 days (customs saturates in Q4).
  6. Last-mile delivery (warehouse to Full warehouse): 3 to 7 days.

Estimated total: 40 to 60 calendar days.

When Should You Place Your Order?

If you want your products ready and available for Buen Fin (mid-November), they should be entering MercadoLibre’s warehouses at the end of October.

Subtracting the 60 days of the logistics process, this means that your purchase order in China has to be placed at the end of August or the beginning of September at the latest.

If you wait until October to place your sea orders for Christmas, your goods will most likely arrive in January.

What to Do If You Are Already Late

If you missed the sea freight window, all is not lost:

1. Fast Air DDP

It is more expensive (which reduces your margin), but air DDP shipping takes 10 to 15 days to reach Mexico from China. It is ideal for small, light or high-perceived-value products (electronics, jewellery, and so on).

2. Mixed Shipping

Many experienced sellers send 20% of their stock by air so they do not lose their ranking on MercadoLibre and can secure fast sales, while the remaining 80% goes by sea to restock at a lower cost.

The Role of Your Agent in Q4

In peak season, Chinese factories are saturated. A supplier on Alibaba may delay your order or make quality mistakes because of the rush.

Having MeliPrep as your China sourcing agent means that:

Plan ahead, consolidate intelligently, and get ready to break sales records this Q4.
